Abundance is a catchall phrase that usually means we want more money, but are afraid to just say so. We dance around it, using words like abundance, or financial freedom instead of just saying we want to earn more and have more to spend.
Yes of course abundance also means having a life full of everything we want emotionally, spiritually and physically, but in business, it’s usually about the cash.
What is it that talking about money causes us to stress, get tightness in our chest and feel ‘non-spiritual’?
If this may be you, I’ve got one question
Does your fear of money hold you back?
Yes. Fear.
I’ve met people who are just scared of the power money has over them.
Creating abundance starts with accepting the place money has in your life. Most of us want abundance, but are unclear or unsure of what that means.
When asked what abundance means to them, my students often say things like:
“Abundance is having everything I need in my life show up with ease.”
or… “All areas of my life flow and I am happy in my practice”.
What we often really mean is we want more money to flow in our lives, but somehow we are scared to admit it. The word itself seems shameful, or we have belief or thought patterns that associate money with greed or being unworthy.
We are embarrassed as spiritual healers to admit we want more cash to spend.
Yet we all have to pay our bills. Most of us have rent, telephone bills, and eat out occasionally. We have to create enough income to support our family and ourselves so live within integrity.
When we don’t pay our bills on time, or can’t afford to keep our basic needs met on an ongoing basis, we let ourselves down. We are embarrassed when we can’t pay our bills, yet we are embarrassed to say we want more money in our lives. We prove to ourselves that we aren’t capable of handing money and we buy into our shame and embarrassment.
The vicious cycle continues around. To have more money we need to step up and admit we want to live fully in life, including having abundance in all forms, love, family, peace, – whatever our dreams may be, and that it includes money, so that we can support ourselves and our families and be without the additional stress of living check to check.
Think of a few people you look up to, or mentors you may have. Do they live in prosperity or poverty?. Do you want to emulate them? Are you proud of what they have accomplished in their lives? Do you imagine they have enough cash? What energy do they put out to their clients about money?
The first step to having financial abundance – more money, is to examine what your own beliefs are around money.
- What did your parents think about money when you were growing up?
- Did they often argue about how to manage the cash?
- How did they choose to spend their money?
- Did they hoard it away or spend it all freely with no thought to the future?
- Do you consider yourself thrifty or a spendthrift?
After you answer these questions I’ve got three easy steps you can take that will hasten your healing around money.
- Understand that money is a tool, like a hammer or your car. You have control over it and can decide what happens to your money. You decide where to spend your money. Maybe this sounds a bit obvious to you, but I’d like you to try this step.
- Write down every single thing you spend money on for one month.
2. Money does not have emotion. It is a thing, a tool used for commerce. Examine your relationship to money as you would examine the other personal relationships in your life. Are you scared of handling large amounts of cash? Do you feel irresponsible? Do you take a child’s helpless role when dealing with money or do you feel as though you have no power when it comes to this area of your life? Is the money thought form taking over so that you have all your energy wrapped up in never having enough? How many minutes a day (or week) do you think about money? Is there another relationship in your life that mirrors your relationship with money? – spouse, mother, father, child, significant other, teacher, employer? Staying unattached, notice how money mirrors other relationships in your life.
- How can you use this information to heal both of these relationships – your personal one and the one you have with money.
3. As you think about all these questions, let go of any expectations you have for yourself, and bring in a new understanding that money is a mathematical energy exchange. If you run out of cash, you can always get more. If you have extra to spend, use it wisely, and with integrity. If you have been fearful of using or having money, take a money management class, or a bookkeeping class so that you can more fully understand how money can be one of many tools to help manage your life – without being obsessive over it or it having control over you.
Let go of your old beliefs, conscious or subconscious. Know deep within your heart you will not change as a person – become greedier, evil extravagant or foolish if you have more money. Know that you can trust yourself with large amounts of cash because you are not afraid of your relationship with money.
Write daily affirmations and be proud when you pay your bills on time.
Let go of the relief you feel when you have some money coming in and just be certain that you deserve it. Be grateful and say Thank You
Live with an abundance prosperity consciousness.
And remember –ask for payment when rendering services!
